Welcome Letter

The Greek Committee on Large Dams (GCOLD) is organizing the 3rd Hellenic Conference on Dams and Reservoirs, to take place in Athens, on 12 - 15 of October 2017.

During the recent difficult years for our country, it was inevitable that even large and important projects would feel the effects of the economic depression. Dams were not the exception and many projects remain incomplete or on paper, even though the need for water resources management and hydroelectric energy production (domestic, low cost and green) is greater than ever. The growing demand for water availability, both for water supply and irrigation, the necessity for green electricity generation and flood protection, have enhanced the urgent need for environmental protection (aquifer replenishment and upgrading river and lake ecosystems) and the development of ancillary activities in reservoirs. All above endeavors are inextricably linked with tourism, which proves to be one of the most fundamental assets for development in our country.

GCOLD invites all those who believe that dams, for water storage and other crucial uses are important for the country and its people, to participate in the Conference, to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas and to share their concerns on the development and future of these projects. The aim of the Conference is to highlight, through the expertise of the authors and of the participants, the ways, means and procedures, for the dams to take the place they deserve, in the road map of the country’s development and in water resources management, so that they become more environmentally friendly, more appreciated by the public, more technically sound and technologically modern, safer in operation and more friendly to ancillary activities.

It is aspired that the 3rd Hellenic Conference on Dams and Reservoirs, following on the footsteps of the previous conferences, will act as an ensuing tool not only for the improvement of the dam institutional framework, not only for all those involved in the design, construction, supervision, operation and maintenance of the projects, but also for all those who are the beneficiaries and clients of those large and important projects, i.e. all of us.

You are invited to participate to the Conference and submit papers on subjects stated in the official agenda.
